From Zhenhu
Zou Yingzi was born in Zhenhu, Suzhou, in January 1972. She began learning embroidery from her mother at six and later studied with Wang Zushi, while developing a sustained interest in painting, photography and sculpture.
Practice and public role
Zou Yingzi is a Chinese Arts and Crafts Master and research-level senior craft artist engaged in the transmission and development of Suzhou embroidery.
Her work spans professional associations, higher education and heritage training, including courses in Hami, Guangzhou University and an online Suzhou embroidery programme recorded at Renmin University of China.
Art and transmission
In 2008 she developed Didi Stitch, using dots and short stitches to build texture. She shares her practice through teaching and craft workshops.
Entanglement · Red entered the British Museum collection; Form and Emptiness Are Not Two entered the National Museum of China collection. Dunhuang remains a continuing theme of her research.
Exhibition record
The National Art Museum of China presented a solo exhibition of Zou Yingzi’s Suzhou embroidery in Gallery 11 from 7 to 19 December 2025.
Embroidery must remain sincere; needle and thread must respect every subject they depict.
