Composition
Based on Mogao Cave 45, the ensemble presents Shakyamuni Buddha, Kasyapa, Ananda, two attendant bodhisattvas and two guardian figures.
The central Buddha measures 139 × 214 cm. The accompanying figures range from 61 × 109 cm to 90 × 163 cm.
Stitch and light
The figures are primarily worked in Didi Stitch, with fine random stitch, flat stitch and gold-thread couching used for murals, armour and halos.
Making
The series took ten years and was completed in 2019. For Zou Yingzi, studying Dunhuang connects historical art with materials and handwork.
